About the Artwork:
‘Butterfly Sun’ beautifully depicts a whirlpool of butterflies flying together towards the center of the board. Joel leaves an intentional circle of negative space at the center, illustrating the mesmerizing sunlike image. The work is composed of laser-cut metal pieces on lacquered wood board. This series draws its inspiration from nature as well as from the computerized world and the doors it opens for artistic creation. Joel finds the ironic process of forming steel, a heavy and cold material, into such delicate forms of life such as the butterflies in ‘Butterfly Sun’ to be an essential dimension to his work, provoking not just breathtaking imagery but additional layers of depth.
